Background

The Met Office Business Group seeks a scientist with expertise and interest in statistical methods relevant to weather and climate science, and particularly to hazardous weather events in a changing climate. 

The jobholder will work in the Science for Energy, Industry and Infrastructure team within the dynamic, interdisciplinary environment of the Met Office Business Group. The Business Group engages with industry, applying world-leading weather and climate science to solve business problems, with the wider aim of providing socio-economic value to the UK. 

A recent success within the team is the design and delivery of a novel application of extreme value theory to a pioneering climate model data set, this has improved the robustness of estimates of extreme weather events for new nuclear infrastructure. This work is on-going and would be expected to be a key area for future development for the jobholder. The jobholder will also have the opportunity to shape, propose and deliver similar work of this nature, with the aim of enhancing safety and efficiency of industry.


Job Purpose

The jobholder will work with weather and climate scientists, and industry and academic partners to develop and apply cutting-edge techniques to meteorological data sets in order to improve safety and efficiency within the Energy, Infrastructure and other industry sectors.


Job Responsibilities

• Develop and apply statistical methods in extreme value analysis (EVA) to quantify extreme values used in the design of infrastructures, especially in the UK;
• Quantify the uncertainties in extreme value estimates due to sampling uncertainty, model formulation, and future climate scenarios;
• Contribute statistical expertise to other scientific projects within the Business Group as appropriate
• Produce and deliver oral and written presentations of scientific results;
• Contribute to preparation of bids and proposals for new work.


Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

• Excellent written and oral communication skills;
• Ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams;
• Interest in contributing to an active intellectual environment;
• Experience with statistical computing, e.g. R, Python


For the Scientist role:

Undergraduate qualification (e.g BSc) with high mathematical or statistical content;
Demonstrable experience of applying statistical methods; especially in extreme value, Bayesian and spatio-temporal statistics

Additionally, For the Senior Scientist role:

Postgraduate qualification (e.g. PhD, MSc) with high mathematical or statistical content;
Demonstrable experience of applying statistical methods and working autonomously; especially in extreme value, Bayesian and spatio-temporal statistics
Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
• Experience with statistical applications in climate/atmospheric/environmental science;
• Experience in climate science, climate modelling, and dynamical systems especially in the manipulation of climate model data;
• Experience in handling and analysing very large data sets, especially spatio-temporal weather and climate data or industry impact data
