We're working with the Sir John Soane Museum in helping to move from
Eventbrite to using Shopify for ticketed events. The main drivers were
a) costs (Eventbrite associated costs are higher vs Shopify even when
having to use subscription based Shopify apps); and b) the possibility
of a single basket platform (aka sell and cross sell both retail and
event products through the same basket and platform).
Shopify OOTB and on its own doesn't cut it though. So at the start of
the process, we carried out some research on what Shopify apps might be
the best fit for our needs. The two apps we looked @ were Evey and BTA
(BookThatApp).
Evey looked like it was geared specifically for selling tickets,
allowing multiple ticket types for multi-level pricing structure; group
tickets (and group ticket 'discounts'; customisable PDFs (including QR
codes); and attendee management. A couple of the 'better' examples we
came across were: https://camptech.ca/ and https://reunion.caltech.edu/
BTA meanwhile can be used for tickets, allowed for showing events sorted
by date, you could also display a (date picker) calendar and it looked
like it could handle a wide range of event types (tours, workshops,
one-offs, repeat and single events, free and paid events etc). Also
ticketed events weren't its sole purpose, it can also be used for
scheduling things - classes, services, appointments, booking spaces etc.
The best and most relevant org using BTA w Shopify was Glasnevin Trust
in Ireland - example event:
https://shop.glasnevintrust.ie/collections/tickets/products/dead-interesting-glasnevin
On the face of it Evey looked the most interesting BUT (and these might
be potentially big buts for some) it didn't have a calendar feature
/and/ it was the most expensive option at $20 per month PER EVENT.
BookThatApp also had a monthly cost ($19.95 p/m) but it comes with
unlimited bookings and unlimited products (i.e. events). That's great
if you're running lots of events and even better if any of those events
are free. Moreover, for the particular event and ticketing needs we were
looking at, Glasnevin's model looked like a good fit.
The decision come down in favour of BTA.
It's an ongoing and gradual process (Soane Museum have just started
offering a handful of ticketed events via Shopify/ BTA - e.g.
https://shop.soane.org/products/soane-highlights-tour), there's more to
do (aka make more of the single basket opportunity) AND it is another
tool for the guys @ Soane to take on (and it's UI is 'ok' but not
brilliant) but so far, BTA has been the right choice. It's stepped up to
most of the requirements, integration with Shopify is robust, support
(from BTA dev'ers) is good and its schedule setting is really strong.
And it's not $20 per month per event.
