The School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR), University of
Sheffield is seeking to appoint a Research Associate to contribute to
the health economic modelling of tobacco and alcohol tax in the UK. This
is a unique and exciting opportunity to join the Sheffield Alcohol
Research Group, an internationally leading public health economic
research team at a world-leading university.
You will work on the SYNTAX project “Integrated evidence synthesis for
joint appraisal of tobacco and alcohol tax interventions for harm
reduction in the UK”. This three-year project is funded by the National
Institute of Health Research's Public Health Research Programme and is a
collaboration between the Universities of Sheffield and Bath.

You will contribute to modelling of the impact of potential changes to
taxation on tobacco and alcohol consumption, health, economic and other
societal outcomes e.g. work absence. Using health economic, statistical
and epidemiological approaches, these analyses will make use of national
survey data on individual consumption and spending, and health outcomes.
You will be expected to develop detailed protocols, negotiate access to
relevant data, analyse this data using appropriate methods (likely to
include econometric analyses of price elasticities), prepare manuscripts
and disseminate results to the public and scientific peers.
You will have direct research experience of statistical modelling using
techniques such as regression or latent class analyses. You will also
have either experience and an enthusiasm to learn health economic
modelling techniques. You will have postgraduate qualifications in a
numerate discipline such as statistics, epidemiology, economics,
operational research or related subjects.
