Hi,
We do 3 yearly medicals on all firefighters regardless of age. The only time we review them annually is if there is a risk identified such as IDDM, MS etc. We also do annual medicals on all breathing apparatus instructors as well as our Urban Search and Rescue Teams as their roles are classed as higher risk.

Interesting thread. I think you have to stick to recommendations dependent on role, and legislative requirements in my mind to apply a blanket increase in frequency just because someone is older, not only puts the organisation at risk of an discrimination case under the auspices of the Equality Act, it means you are not necessarily following evidence based practice. Of course the employees and unions will be all for it as they will be viewing it as much of a perk as anything else. I've had similar issues when we reviewed risk assessments for staff working (non fresh) sewage, and based on the evidence removed some of the vaccinations we had been offering for years. We had complaints from the unions and workers however when we explained to them that both the evidence, increased control measures and refined working practices meant that the vaccinations weren't necessary, they accepted it.
I also have to treat people as individuals. I know employees who are well into their 60s and run marathons, vs those who have been unfit since their 40s and even younger.

Although that could be construed as discrimination I increased all my safety critical medicals to two years over forty five after discussions with my clients and the employees seem to think this was a good idea. We do the safety critical medical for over 60's annually again the employees are all for it and it reassures them and the employer. It is important to discuss this thoroughly and get the employers, employees and unions involved to agree. It makes sense as people get older we are not as fit and may need more adjustments to the work.
Kindest Regards

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Safety criticals for over 65s
Hi All,
Am I right in thinking that we should increase the frequency of safety critical assessments to annually from 3 yearly for employees over 65 years of age? Or is that now classed as against the Equality Act?
Many thanks in anticipation.
