PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic researcher with experience in medical image computing to join a world-leading research group working on developing and translating state-of-the-art image processing techniques to characterise the liver tumours across scales.
Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research associate position in the Translational Imaging Group (TIG) at the UCL Centre for Medical Image Computing (CMIC) within the Department of Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering at University College London (UCL). Located in the heart of central London within one of the world’s leading universities, CMIC (www.ucl.ac.uk/cmic) is one of the largest research centres of its kind in the world with a reputation for internationally-leading research.
The post holder will work as part of a first-in-men trial and research project on the use of a new drug-eluting radiopaque bead for trans-arterial chemoembolization (TACE). Patients will first undergo TACE, followed by surgical liver tumour resection 7-21 days later. To better understand the liver tumour biology and physiology, patients in this study are imaged with advanced MRI and dual-energy CT (pCT) at baseline, pre- and post-TACE, and pre-surgery. Finally, high resolution microCT and histological imaging is acquired to further characterise the metabolism of the resected tumour.
This end-to-end project will require the development of lachine learning, Deep Learning, and classical imaging tools for imaging across scales and modalities, encompassing subjects such as multimodal image registration, histological volume reconstruction, segmentation for arterial embolization localisation, and modelling of bead density. The successful applicant will be required to work closely with clinical and academic researchers at the collaborating departments as well as colleagues in CMIC.
The post is funded for 2 years in the first instance and is available from 1st Feb 2018.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must have a PhD, or equivalent academic or industrial experience and must be able to demonstrate strong image computing and problem solving skills. Candidates must possess a first or upper second undergraduate degree, or equivalent, in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or a related subject. Experience in the design, implementation, and validation of appropriate medical image processing methods, image registration, segmentation and modelling, strong software development skills using languages such as C++ or python, and a good publication record in high-impact peer-reviewed academic journals and conferences. Experience with image processing methods for histological reconstruction and/or multimodal image analysis is highly desirable.
