In the latest PN Review (No 239, Jan-Feb 2018) there’s a rather long article by Rebecca Watts entitled “The cult of the noble amateur”. I think that if attention were paid to that, we could for a change start talking in the present tense rather than rehearsing categories from 50 years ago. Not that I have anything to say about it beyond the obvious, but it is an important statement about what things have “come to”, I think, and perhaps people here who are normally at odds with each other might come together in some way in recognising the emergence of a third and potentially more threatening force, if it really is. The American angle would also be interesting.
