I always thought the whole idea of trying to make poetry like pop music at a time (in the sixties) when pop music was so good was a bit pointless. Like trying to re-invent the wheel. Poetry can never match pop/rock music for obvious reasons — it has no melody, as Andrew Duncan once said when asked about this.

Yes Gerard you're right, but for a while some of Henri and McGough were almost interchangeable. I lost interest in McGough quite quickly but Henri was always my favourite even though I don't think he followed through on the promise of his work. I met Patten and he was instrumental in my first attempts to set up a poetry group. Very nice bloke.
