I don’t know about this, Gerard. The way I see it is that poetry can be seen in this way. Just look at the large number of middle-class students (are there any working class ones?) on academic avantgarde poetry postgraduate courses. The so-called “mainstream” tends to be more open/free market class-wise and don’t seem to be as elitist and closed shop as the avantgarde—which is ironic seeing as the avantgarde see themselves as progressive and inclusive.
