Bedford BC - OFFICIAL-Unsecure
I would have thought this was well documented at least as far as local authority archives services are concerned (check out the Cipfa statistics?). I know that I have mentioned the drop in on-site visitors in every annual report I’ve written in the last three years. Generally I blame it on more online sources for family history and people not realising we exist in spite of our best efforts. I’d like to think that having an online catalogue was helping people too but I think the other two reasons are the main ones for my service at least.
Of course there are no doubt wonderful exceptions to my general perception – possibly those offices that have new premises and therefore accompanying interest and publicity?
Cipfa stats are published and my service’s most recent annual report is freely available on our website.

Subject: On-site user figures
Dear all
I am currently working as a freelance archivist for an Archives & Special Collections Department in the north of England. Their on-site visitor usage figures have dropped fairly dramatically over the past couple of years. I was wondering if other institutions have noticed this (i.e. if this is a general trend across the sector)? If so, does anyone has any idea what the reason(s) for this might be?
Many thanks
Emma
