The Centre for Cancer Prevention (CCP) is at the forefront of research internationally into the prevention and control of cancer. We have particularly active programmes of research studying breast, cervical, colorectal and prostate cancer prevention, cancer screening and statistical methods for clinical trials and epidemiology.

The Preventive Neurology Unit (PNU) sits alongside CCP and is a new initiative designed to study key neurodegenerative diseases, with a focus on Parkinson’s disease (PD), all cause dementia and multiple sclerosis (MS).

The aim of the PNU is to characterise these diseases at the earliest possible stage, define ‘at-risk’ populations and employ preventive strategies to reduce their burden, through novel clinical trials. This exciting new initiative is the first of its kind and aims to establish itself over the next 3 years as an internationally-recognised centre of excellence in this field.

The post-holder will provide statistical support for observational studies that relate to key neurological diseases (PD, dementia, and MS). The flagship study is PREDICT-PD, which aims to identify a population at high risk of developing Parkinson’s disease, with a view to undertaking neuroprotective clinical trials to delay or prevent the onset of PD. The PREDICT-PD study will ultimately have 10,000 participants. Methods used in PREDICT-PD will be applied to other large datasets and to other neurological outcomes such as all cause dementia and MS.

The post-holder will also provide support for treatment, screening and epidemiological studies within CCP as well as a statistical consultancy service for external groups.

Applicants must have a good degree (First or 2:1) and an MSc or PhD or equivalent experience in statistics or a related quantitative field, along with experience of working with large data sets.  Candidates will need to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a working knowledge of statistical, mathematical and database packages. Knowledge and experience in using statistical analysis tools such as STATA or R would be advantageous.

The post is full-time and fixed term until 31st July 2020. The starting salary will be £32,956 to £43,152 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave and defined benefits pension scheme.
