Dear Martin, I have also addressed issues of empathy in my research ontouristic encounters in Cuba (working with Jason Throop and DougHollan) and you may find some of it relevant for your work. Here a couple of articles addessing the subject:
Simoni, V., 2016. Ethnography,Mutuality, and the Utopia of Love and Friendship in Touristic Cuba. Journal of the Anthropological Society ofOxford 8(1), 143-167.Simoni V. and J. Throop, 2014. Hope these can be helpful! Hello all:
I would also suggest Ruth Behar’s “The Vulnerable Observer,” a particular methodology which takes into the vulnerability and oftentimes “failure” of the ethnographer - an ethnography method explored throughout feminist methodological approaches.
Good luck, and thanks for the question!
Best,
Heather
