Summer School in Ethnographic Methods in NewYork City
11th CIFAS Field School in EthnographicResearch Methods, July 23 to August 2, 2018
The Comitas Institute for Anthropological Study (CIFAS)is pleased to announce the 11th CIFAS FieldSchool in Ethnographic Research Methods, in New York City.
The goal of the Field School is to offertraining in the foundations and practice of ethnographic methods. The facultyworks closely with participants to identify the required field methods neededto address their academic or professional needs. The Field School is suitablefor graduate and undergraduate students in social sciences and other fields ofstudy that use qualitative approaches (such as education, communication,cultural studies, health, social work, human ecology, development studies,consumer behavior, among others), applied social scientists, professionals, andresearchers who have an interest in learning more about ethnographic methodsand their applications.
Program:
• July 23: Foundations of ethnographic research
• July 24: Theory and practice: social theoriesin the field
• July 25: Research design
• July 26: Data collection techniques
• July 27: Planning the logistics of fieldresearch
• July 28: Field trip: Thunderbirds’ 40th AnnualGrand Mid-Summer Pow Wow, Queens Farm Museum
• July 29: Sunday – no class.
• July 30: Ethnography in specific fields ofactivity (applied social sciences, health, social service, environmentalstudies, public policy design, business, and others)
• July 31: Principles of organization andindexation of field data
• August 1: Analyzing field data; qualitativeanalysis software packages: basic principles
• August 2: Wrap up session
Classes will run from 9 AM to 12 PM
The total work load of the course is 30 hours.Students interested in earning credits for the course may have additionalassignments in order to totalize 45 hours of activities (what is equivalent to3 credits).
Course venue: classes will take place at theInstitute for Latin American Studies at Columbia University.
