I can't understand how having a "lengthy tradition behind them" excludes them from being part of the avantgarde. Can you explain this?
Also, are you saying that "avantgarde" has no literal meaning? If so, what is it's literal meaning?

Yes in general terms sound and visual poetry get called avant-garde but in truth both those forms now have a lengthy tradition behind them. The term is useful but I think that most of us would agree it has no relation to its literal meaning and hasn't had for a long time.
