Hello!
At Brunel we have a research Institute/centre which specialises in high resolution physical and chemical analysis for consultancy and research. Brunel researchers use the instruments for their own research and may or may not transfer all or subsets of the instrumental data to their own storage.
The Institute to date, has kept hold of all the data generated as a back up but also so that researchers can return to the data for further analysis, if required.
Recently however, they have introduced instruments which are starting to generate very large sets of data and are not sure how this can be sustained, particularly if they need to adhere to Brunel's RDM policy, which states that research data should be preserved for a minimum of 10 years.
Whilst we may be able to tackle the physical storage side of things, I am interested to know whether anyone else with similar institutes or centres have their own specific policies/agreements on RDM and data retention. What agreements are made between the researcher and the centre as to who is responsible for the instrumental data outputs? Should researchers expect the centre to keep everything?
If anyone has examples of such policies or agreements and how these align with the broader Institutional RDM policy and would be willing to share them - I would be most grateful!
Many thanks,
Catharine Bailey
