PhD Studentships (5) in Astrophysics at the University of Hull
As part of an ambitious investment strategy coinciding with the City of
Hull's 2017 City of Culture award, the E.A. Milne Centre for
Astrophysics is pleased to announce the availability of 5 fully-funded
UK/EU PhD studentships, for entry in Sept 2018.
The Milne Centre is a dynamic, supportive, and diversity-embracing
environment, host to both the recent National Astronomy Meeting and
STFC Summer School. The Centre is the first and only UK institute
invited to join the NSF Physics Frontier Centre, JINA (The Joint
Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics) and Joint PI with the Korea
Institute for Advanced Study for one of the most ambitious
computational experiments in history, the newly commissioned Horizon Run.
The 5 students will enjoy unlimited access to one of the country's
most powerful High Performance Computing Facilities.
The 5 studentships form the basis of the Milne Centre's "Astrophysics
Data Science Cluster", which has seen the appointment of 8 staff
and 19 PhD students over the past 2 years. The parallel appointment
of 2 additional postdoctoral fellows accompanies the current call,
funded through the award of the Centre's recently announced inaugural STFC
Consolidated Grant.
Detailed project descriptions can be found under the "Astrophysical Data
Science" link at http://www.hull.ac.uk/Study/PGR/PhD/PhD.aspx and include:
1. Data Mining the Horizon Run (Gibson & Few)
2. The Production of Radioactive Elements in Stars (Pignatari & Gibson)
3. The Growth of Galaxy Clusters (Roediger)
4. Dusty Interstellar Ices (Benoit & Pignatari)
5. The Feeding Habits of Galaxies (Pimbblet & Penny)
The deadline for applications is 8th February 2018.
