Hi Patrick

The UCL Engineering schools engagement 50:50 Strategy is about engaging a more diverse engineering student body, with a particular focus on girls. They have put together a brilliant STEM reading list for kids of various ages: http://www.engineering.ucl.ac.uk/schools-engagement/news/books-budding-engineers-ucl-engineering-favourites/

All best

Badass women through history. A bit Horrible Histories in its subject matter, but I highly recommend it!

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Book information

Hi folks

Slightly off topic but hope you can help. My niece will be 11 in a few weeks and I'd like to get her a book about women in science. Something to inspire her. Even if she does not go into science I'd like to be able to help her see that women can do anything they want.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received. It would need to be something suitable for her age if possible.

Thanks

Patrick.

We have an excellent opportunity for a Kennedy Trust for Rheumatology Research Sponsored Daphne Jackson Fellowship

Applications are invited for a Kennedy Trust sponsored three year Daphne Jackson Fellowship to be held at any UK university or research establishment. The fellowship is intended for a scientist wishing to return to research into any clinical or pre-clinical subject in the field of rheumatology and related musculoskeletal or immunological diseases.

Daphne Jackson Fellowships

The Daphne Jackson Trust is dedicated to returning scientists, engineers, technologists and mathematicians to their careers following a break taken for family, caring or health reasons.

Daphne Jackson Fellowships are unique - they offer STEM professionals wishing to return to a research career after a break of two or more years, the opportunity to balance an individually tailored retraining programme with a challenging research project in a suitably supportive environment.

Fellowships are part-time over two or three years and consist of a challenging research project and at least 100 hours retraining per year. The unparalleled support offered by the Trust's Fellowship Advisors and administrative staff, coupled with mentoring and retraining provided during the Fellowship, give returners the confidence and skills they need to successfully return to research.

Subject: Seeking advice/recommendations for cleaning mobile planetariums

Hi all,

I'm in need of advice for cleaning planetariums... We have a mobile planetarium dome (with cover) that's getting on for 10 years old and is in need of a wash.

Where do I look to go about getting this cleaned?

I'd be keen to have any recommendations of places/services people have used and advice on: rough costs to expect (ours is 6m diameter, 5m height if that counts for anything); how long places may take to clean; and what I need to think about re:transporting the dome to these places (will they usually arrange pick-up or do I have to look into postage/transport etc? - we're based in Culham, Oxfordshire).

Thanks for any thoughts in advance.

Hi Nik,

It has been a few years since we did ours, but feel free to get in touch if you want to know how we went around it.

It’s also worth considering asking the fine folk at the British Association of Planetaria: https://www.planetaria.org.uk/

Or looking at the Dome L group: http://www.planetarium.net/home/dome-l-subscription

strong female character leads for fiction, you can also select by age group

Subject: Stalls outside the university

Hi

Just getting some thoughts together about doing pop-up stalls outside the

university.

I'm looking for advice or pointers to resources about what *practical*

things I should ask a university researcher to think about if they were to

head out into the high street or a local public space to do some public

engagement.

So in addition to them being clear about audiences, objectives etc, and in

addition to bringing the equipment they need, is there anything else they

need to think of? Public liability insurance springs to mind, and maybe

there are other issues?

If anyone who's done this would be prepared to chat, maybe they could email

me personally rather than replying to the group?

Thanks

Neil

Hey,

I bought my son a book called ‘100 women in science’, which is great. It’s aimed at kids, but was a bit too ambitious for him.... (he’s only one!). Would be perfect for an 11 year old though I think. I also bought him ‘goodnight stories for rebel girls’ - not just scientists, but women achieving brilliant things in every field (I think boys need to grow up realising that girls can do anything too). That one’s excellent, and again perfect for an 11 year old, I’d say. There’s a Facebook group/website called ‘a mighty girl’ which has hundreds of suggestions of books/toys for encouraging girls in STEM and other areas - worth checking out for other recommendations.

I hope that helps!

Any suggestions would be gratefully received. It would need to be something suitable for her age if possible.

For a nine or seven year old I would recommend a Sphero Sprk+ which you can code do to all sorts of clever things, including to drive into your sibling and say rude things to them (it may just be my children who are motivated in this way?) http://www.sphero.com/sprk-plus ... it’s been a proper hit here, and utterly indestructible despite the best efforts of my pre-schooler.

Or, going more old school, Meccano has also gone down well.

I’m not sure which of the book recommendations you were referring to, but Goodnight Stories ... is certainly suitable for a 9yo. My 8yo really likes it. It’s beautifully illustrated too, feels like a real treat.

Not a book suggestion, but what about a set of tools; socket set, screwdrivers, pliers, etc. Nothing like having your own set of tools.

Dear List members,
