Audience in Mind: Social Approaches to Spectating
An interdisciplinary forum sponsored by the Centre for Cognition, Kinesthetics and Performance
Jarman Building, University of Kent
8 January 2018, 10:30 – 16:30
This forum will explore the individual yet social experience of spectator/auditorship, or “attending” in Di Benedetto’s broader sense-encompassing usage. A participatory workshop led by Lynn Froggett (U Central Lancashire) will demonstrate the Visual Matrix Method, a means of drawing out and interpreting largely unarticulated dimensions of spectatorial experience. Prof Robert Shaughnessy (Surrey) will explore Flute Theatre’s processes of inclusive, participatory work with Shakespearean performances, and a keynote on audience social interaction will be offered by Prof Bruce McConachie (U Pittsburgh), author of Engaging Audiences: A Cognitive Approach to Spectating in Theatre (2008) and co-editor of the book series Cognitive Studies in Literature and Performance (Palgrave Macmillan). A plenary discussion with Prof Nicola Shaughnessy, Dr Melissa Trimingham (Kent) and the presenters will conclude the forum.
