Indeed, M-discs is what I am basing the current research on. The information on the material composites of their discs is very tightly controlled. I do believe that their DVDs are the most stable we might have - still have to verify that. The test of their DVDs was done as research they contracted with the US Navy, not as US Navy initialized test. Never the less I do believe that they might be the best available. The information on their Blu-rayy discs is not sufficient and leaves many questions open (and the blu-rays were not tested as the DVDs). I am following up on all levels as you can see from my notes. Hope to be able to provide a final evaluation next year. The archival startegy we follow at EMPAC is rooted in what I wrote.

Subject: bit level archiving
I would be very, very happy to learn if anyone else is actually considering archiving on the bit level.
This is a big issue. The best solution I have so far is archiving to M-discs, which come in CD-R, DVD-R or BluRay-R but use a new process that is much less prone to bit-rot than other optical disk technologies.
The claims for M-discs are 1000 years. The US Navy did extensive test on optical disks including the M-disc and had very good results from the M-discs:

Yes, you still need drives to read them, but media stability is half the battle…
This problem is not unique to new media artists. Our civilization needs a solution to this problem. Hopefully it does not rest entirely on the shoulders of poor overworked media artists to work this out…
