CONFERENCE – PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT
Histories of the Red Cross Movement since 1919
13/14 June 2019, Geneva, Switzerland
This 2-day conference seeks to bring together historians and practitioners working on the Red Cross Movement to discuss and debate the legacy, events, and ideas flowing from 1919 and to engage with contemporary issues and concerns of the broader Red Cross Movement. Hosted to coincide with the centenary of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, this conference seeks to engage those interested in the following themes:
• Challenges of professionalisation vs voluntarism
• Proliferation of humanitarian activities/expansion/ competition for humanitarian space
• Technological aspects of operations and its impact
• Rethinking the development of IHL
• Gender and humanitarianism
• Role of media and selling/mobilising the Red Cross idea
• Shifting from war to peace/disaster management
