Primary Research Group Inc. has published the International Survey of Business & Economics University Faculty: Use of Library Provided Databases, ISBN 978-1-57440-485-2

The report looks closely at how business and economics faculty use major databases oriented towards their subject and that are maintained by major business and economics university libraries. The study also gives detailed data and commentary on how they evaluate the range and quality of the databases in their library, and which information literacy and database use training methods they find preferable – classes, seminars, videos, peer to peer instruction, one on one sessions with librarians, etc. The study also gives insights into the extent of support for paper vs. digital information formats. In addition, the report gives detailed use data on a broad range of databases, including Statista, Wharton Research Data Services, EconLit, Google Scholar, Bloomberg, ABI-Inform, Business Source Complete, Factiva, IBISWorld, and Datastream.

Data is based on a survey of more than 180 scholars drawn from more than 100 major research university academic departments and MBA programs in the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. Research findings are broken out by various criteria, such as type of university, MBA program or Grad/Undergrad business or economics program, scholar’s country, gender, political views, academic subject specialty, academic title and other criteria

Just a few of the 96-page report’s main findings are that:

4% of those sampled use Business Source Complete daily and a further 14% use it more than once/week.

Scholars teaching marketing were much more satisfied with the range of databases available to them than were scholars in accounting and finance.

Faculty from the UK/Ireland and Australia/NZ were much more likely than those in the USA or Canada to use Google Scholar every day or at least once per week.

24% of faculty in economics make frequent use of EconLit, consulting it either every day or once per week.

A PDF version of the report is currently available from Primary Research Group Inc. for $124.00 and a print version of the report at the same price will be available for shipment on Jan 2, 2018.
