Dear Gem,
At the Pitt Rivers Museum 65% of our school visits are from secondary and FE, mainly year 10 and year 12. Virtually all of these come as art groups. Getting out to a museum and using sketchbooks to draw from objects, and then adding the contextual detail available can really improve GCSE grades in art. We have example sketchbooks and give introductory talks on how to approach drawing and annotation in a museum setting. It is hard for teachers to get permission to get out of school, but if they can show that it will improve GCSE grades then the argument is half won.
We have developed art resources online for students to use before or after their visit. They are not the best in the world as these resources were produced in-house without a budget, but they do allow for follow on work, and hopefully act as inspiration for students.
