Subject: UK Social Policy Association Annual Conference 2018 - First Call for Papers

UK SOCIAL POLICY ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2018

Wednesday 11th- Friday 13th JULY

University of York

First Call for Papers

Conference Theme: ‘In the Shadow of the 2008 Crisis: Social Policy Ten years on’

We are delighted to be hosting the 2018 Social Policy Association Annual Conference at the University of York. The city of York has a social investigative heritage that has influenced the shape of Social Policy in the UK and beyond, and we hope will provide continuing inspiration for analysis and debate at this year’s conference. The conference will be held on the easily accessible University of York campus with good transport links from all major UK cities, as well as local airports (Manchester and Leeds-Bradford).

Confirmed plenary speakers:

Eftychia Achtsioglou is Minister of Labour, Social Insurance and Social Solidarity, Greece. She holds a PhD in Law and has published on European Union labour law, labour rights and democracy.

Bea Cantillon is Professor of Social Policy and Director of the Herman Deleeck Centre for Social Policy at the University of Antwerp, Belgium. She has published widely in the areas of poverty, social security, the welfare state and gender and works with a number of organisations on employment and social security issues.

Aditya Chakrabortty is senior economics commentator for The Guardian and an economics writer.

Hartley Dean is Professor of Social Policy at the London School of Economics, UK. He has published extensively on poverty, social justice and welfare rights including Social Rights and Human Welfare (Routledge, 2015).

We particularly welcome paper proposals that reflect on the conference theme, however interpreted, and hope to encourage debate on some of the following issues:

• Ageing and pension challenges

• Attitudes to welfare

• Austerity and social policy

• Europe, Brexit and social policy

• Housing crisis

• Inequalities at the global, world regional, national and local levels

• International development and social policy

• Migration, labour mobility and social rights

• Poverty and social protection

• Social insecurity and citizenship

• Social divisions of welfare

• Work, employment and unemployment

• Youth transitions and social investment

However, we invite papers on any aspect of social policy within any country/countries of the world and stress that papers from outside the conference theme will be accommodated, as is the usual practice for the SPA annual conferences.

In addition to single papers, we would especially welcome proposals for symposia, whereby three or more papers linked to a particular theme, are submitted together for consideration. Symposia will allow participants to engage more deeply with their special interests and create a space for focused debate on a specific theme. Ideas for symposia will need to be submitted by the panel organiser in the first instance.

For papers, abstracts should be 200-400 words and proposals for symposia should consist of a title and 200 word outline of the aims of the symposium as well as details of both the organiser and contributors' names and email addresses. All abstracts and symposium proposals will be reviewed by a Programme Committee prior to acceptance.

Abstracts and Symposia proposals can be submitted electronically from

The deadline for the submission of abstracts and proposals is:

Monday 19th February 2018.

Best Wishes

The York Conference Team
