for instance,
on a recent trip back to your part of the world, I picked up a
copy of Delanty
and Matto's THE WORD EXCHANGE
with forward by
SEAMUS HEANEY & thought:
how could I have missed this one? All of these ANGLO-SAXON
poems in Translation
but here was the kicker from Greg D.: who confesses: "...Many of
the poets are not well versed
in Old English. As A.E. Stallings
says in her commentary,
'I have no Anglo-Saxon,
except inasmuch as
I speak English.' We thought it
would be an informative
addition to have a
dozen poets comment on Old English poetry
and on the process of
translating it. We believed the poets,
rather than translators who were not poets--could lift the poems from mere
translations to poems in
them
selves,
thus matching the ORIGINAL SPIRIT-ENERGY as well as content.
The reader can see, for instance, how successful
the translations are in
AE Stalling's tour de force The Riming Poem..."
But don't forget
to bring yr.
