You could include the Boscawen Diagonal Shaft at Botallack Mine here. This
was angled down at about 23 degrees. It used an eight-man gig raised and
lowered along tracks by a bog-standard rotative beam engine. In June (I
think) 1863 the chain broke; the emergency brake was never engaged and all
on board, eight men and a boy, were killed. Straight or vertical shafts in
Cornwall were virtually unknown until the 20th century as shafts were sunk
on the underlay, or underlie, of the lodes, so they followed every change in
dip.

Many thanks to Kelvin and Simon for their replies about the earliest
man-riding winders.
Can anybody help with suggestions for answers to my second question:-
"were there particular reasons why mining companies might have avoided
installing them?"
Cheers,

According to 'A History of Coal Mining in Great Britain' by Galloway

it was presumably also used for man-riding in place of them having to
hang onto the rope.
