Dear all,
We are looking for geophysicists to stand for election to the
Council of the Geological Society. The Council meets five-ish
times per year and you might have to do some committee
work requiring more meetings. Meetings are at Burlington
House in London but you can join by conference call.
The deadline for nominations is Friday 5th January, at noon.
Details are at: https://www.geolsoc.org.uk/elections2018
The Council is legally responsible for the Geological Society
as a charity, so it has an overview of all the activities of
the Society including science (conferences and "themed years"),
public engagement, publications (Journal of the Geological Society,
Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology, Petroleum Geoscience
and others), education and outreach, chartership and professional
accreditation, and the underpinning finance, personnel and
practical issues of running the Society as a going concern.
The term of office is three years. You have
to be eligible to be a trustee (e.g. not currently bankrupt - read
the full set of rules on the actual nomination form, downloadable
from the website above).
You need to be a Fellow of the Geological Society and you need
a proposer and two seconders who are also Fellows. If you can't
assemble these yourself, let me know and I will help.
There is also no reason why the new editor of "Geoscientist"
shouldn't be a geophysicist. See the advertisement at:
https://www.geolsoc.org.uk/editor
There is general outreach as well as the specific job of editing
the magazine in the job description. The GeolSoc is looking
for an experienced and qualified science communicator.
The deadline for applying is Friday 12th January (a week later
than the Council nominations deadline).
You can't do both, i.e. be on Council and edit Geoscientist, as
this would cause a conflict of interest!
Regards,
Sheila Peacock,
Geological Society Council; BGA Committee.
