How to Market Library Databases and Divert Students
from Using Alternative Databases: Some Observations about This Idea
This post is taken from my comments about a promotional post regarding a
new edition of a book that teaches librarians to promote subsription
databases over alternative information products like Google, Google Books
and Google Scholar. I sure learned how wrong I was for suggesting that
one should use any and all databases that are helpful.
Here then are my observations regarding this matter.

understood how many resources are made available to them online, they
wouldn go to alternative information providers to do their research.
Online library systems don make e-resources very accessible nor does
simply making users aware of resources solve the problem given the
number of resources available so getting the word out effectively
means creating strategic marketing programmes.

I use and teach about so called quality databases and often get far fewer
results from groups of them than from Google web search, not to mention
Google Books and Google Scholar. Certainly, searched effectively for
limiting to scholarly and even peer reviewed content, Google, Google
Scholar and Google Books are important sources. Google Scholar even has
links for subscribing institutions to "cited by" source lists from Web of
Science. True Google limits users to no more than 1,000 results in each
search, but one can search year by year in at least some Google databases
and multiply that number times the number of years searched if there are
at least 1,000 publications per year found by a Google search.
Consider this search strategy and its execution in Google.

The above examples are the first ten items found with my search. Now I
suspect that the marketing of quality research databases covered in the
promoted book does not include Google Web Search, but the above ten
citations are to scholarly sources taken from the top of the deck from a
Google search.
Indeed the citation to the book in question is taken from a Google Books
search of that books title in Google Books that lists over 3,000 hits and
leads to up to 1,000 actual hits in Google Books

Is this book ignoring as an "alternative source" Google as a resource for
finding scholarly information?

Given my search for the word Google in an earlier edition of this book,
the null result of this search might indicate Google products are
alternative sources that libraries are not be promoting in the thinking of
this books authors.
A search of Google Scholar for this topic finds 17,300 results and of the
first ten citations found in the Scholar search, 7 of the 10 sources were
with links to Web of Science cited sources with a range of 41 to 392
sources, and five of those ten with over 100 sources citing the works
found in Web of Science.
One can provide clients with a simple shortened URL from any of the above
noted searches and they can use this link to reproduce the search
themselves and work with the results.
One should beware of avoiding "alternative information providers" if their
name begins with Google as doing so could miss a huge number of peer
reviewed and scholarly sources found in the searches of these
alternatives. How many databases outside of Web of Science and Scopus
have many citing sources listed with citations to found publications?
Google Scholar, Google Books with book or article title searches and even
Google find such content. Also one can replace "site:" with and and
probably find even more sources.
