If you posted to the Axwoman user group, someone there could share their
failure experience with you.
My advice is to use Avignon (not any other) as your first testing case,
by following the tutorial step by step:

At the city scale, we recommend use natural streets rather than axial
lines since the former is much better than the latter in capturing the
underlying living structure of far more the less-connected than
well-connected; see some recent tweets:
