In 2018 The Sociological Review will be hosting our largest conference to date! This is a long-overdue celebration of our renewed commitment to fostering collaborations and dialogues that shape the nature and scope of the sociological, to making the sociological matter. Undisciplining seeks to challenge the presumed mainstream of sociological thought, its geographical assumptions and disciplinary hierarchies. It builds on The Sociological Review’s rich history and future ambitions to bring the conversations at the edges into the centre, to unsettle comfortable and convenient understandings of the social world, and to recognise that the potential of sociological thought and understanding exists through debates that extend beyond disciplines and the university.

Take part

We invite submissions from social scientists at all stages in their academic careers, as well as from sociologically-inclined publics. We encourage submissions across a range of formats including film, workshops, performances, and posters. And if you have an idea that does not seem to fit to any of these formats, get in touch ([log in to unmask]) to discuss it with a member of the organising committee. Deadline: 27th November, 2017 at 17.00 GMT 

Propose a workshop

These should be organised to speak to the conference theme, but the format is up to you. Each workshop will be allocated 1.5 hours, so that is the time you have at your disposal. 
Some suggested ideas for the format are: 

*short interventions by up to 4 people (to be named on the proposal) on a theme pertinent to the conference, followed by time for discussion and debate
*author-meets-critics style session
*hands-on participatory activities (e.g. zine-making)
*panel debates
When putting together your workshop, please pay due consideration issues of diversity and equality.
  
Propose a visual or performative intervention

The venue includes cinema and gallery space. We want to make the best use of these, so are seeking contributions that speak to the conference theme in different ways. This might include: 

*short films
*art work, poster, photography or other graphic submission
*performances and installations (e.g. dance, storytelling), allocated 1.5 hours

Further criteria

You may submit abstracts for more than one participation format, however spaces are limited to one session per applicant. Should your proposal be successful for more than one format, you will have the opportunity to decide between which one you would like to do.

The deadline for call for abstract submission is Monday 27th November 2017, 17.00 GMT. Late applications will not be accepted under any circumstances.


Full Conference Registration Fee

£100.00 standard, £50.00 concessionary.
Refreshments and lunch will be provided, as well as evening dinner for the first night of the conference.
Registration will open in January 2018!

There are a limited number of travel, accommodation and childcare bursaries allocated to early career researchers (including postgraduate students) and others on the grounds of need (e.g. those in casual employment).
