Dear all,
the Royal Astronomical Society is calling for nominations for its
thesis prizes, deadline 31st January 2018 for theses of PhDs
submitted to a UK university in 2017 (i.e. viva held and all
corrections completed by end 2017).
see www.ras.org.uk for details and how to submit a nomination.
The Keith Runcorn prize is for theses in geophysics, including
seismology, solar physics, planetary science, "etc.";
The Patricia Tomkins prize is for theses in "instrumentation science
for astronomy and geophysics", with the qualifier "while the support
is aimed at developing skills in scientific hardware such as electronics,
detectors and optics, the development of novel software specific to a
hardware project will also be considered".
The nominee need not be a member of the RAS but the nominator
should be; hence if you are a GeolSoc BGA member and want to nominate
someone and you can't find a RAS member to help, please contact me.
Sheila Peacock,
BGA awards officer.
