I'd love to say I was driven by a burning desire to be an academic but really it was the fact that when I did a master's degree, my supervisor said - 'fancy doing a funded PhD?' and I thought 'well if I don't like it, I'll just quit'.
I did actually quit for a bit after my PhD and did other stuff and then came back.
Management being the area it is, I think it's a bit more common than other areas to find that you work with (but not exclusively) a lot of people who just drifted into it.
