Visible Language Special Issue: Visible Language & Historical Evidence
Call for Papers
Context: At its inception, the history of visual communication design
relied on the intuition of practitioners and the connoisseurship of
collectors; its narrative prioritized aesthetic styles and eminent
designers. More recently, historians across the design disciplines have
emphasized the need for empirical research, cultural contextualization,
and diverse global narratives. The time is ripe for historians of visual
communication design to contribute to this work.
Special issue CFP:
This special issue of Visible Language seeks to establish design history
as an ongoing and integral part of the journals larger initiative toward
evidence-based inquiry in visual communication design. Articles accepted
for publication in this issue will document and interrogate historical
evidence relative to the past practices, artifacts, and uses of visual
communication design. Of particular interest are articles addressing
under-represented research areas: women designers, designers of color,
design outside of western Europe and the United States, and design
outside of the Modernist tradition.
Areas of inquiry might include but are not limited to:
Designers who have been written out of the dominant historical narrative
Designers, practices, and artifacts from locations outside North America
and western Europe
Anonymous or ubiquitous design artifacts and their place in the
historical narrative
Collaborative design practices and their historical outcomes or cultural

Call for proposals EVA London Conference 2018
Submission of proposals(in abstract form) is now open. Deadline: 15th
January 2018
Proposals may be for a paper, a paper with demo, a demonstration, a
workshop, or a panel discussion.Your proposal should come under one of
the conference themes.
Summary proposals only, please!Please submit only a summary proposal, up
to one page (400 words) for selection. Your proposal must be submitted

PAPERS
Papers will be presented in 20-minute slots (either in plenary sessions
or in parallel) and be associated with a publication of up to 8 pages in
the proceedings.
DEMONSTRATIONS
Demonstrations will be formally timetabled normally in parallel with
other sessions, in 20-minute slots. Proposals are invited and should be
submitted in outline as for papers, above. However, we will not expect
detailed demo requirements until nearer the conference, to allow time
for development. For publication you will be able to offer either a
2-page summary describing the demo in association with a formal 8-page
paper and presentation.
PANEL SESSIONS AND WORKSHOPS
Proposals for panel sessions or workshops are welcome. A panel session
would consist of two or more panel members who each make brief
presentations or statements, followed by discussion with the audience.
We will look for panel sessions to be of wide interest and to stimulate
and engage the audience, since most delegates are interested and often
expert in using and exploring technologies.
A workshop should be a practical tutorial and would normally in one or
two 90-minute sessions.

Call Themes
1. UtilizingArchives and CollectionsforTextile Education, Industry and
Practice
Archives and collections exist as repositories of the past, containing
artifacts and materials awaiting reactivation in order to discover new
meaning. Textile designers, artists, researchers, historians and
educators often use historical sources for reference and inspiration.
Increasingly, design company archives are used to promote brand heritage
and for design reproduction and adaptation. This call invites
submissions that address the theme of archive and collection
utilization, specific focal points are not limited to, but could include
the following:
- Learning from history and tradition
- Interpretation, appropriation, adaption and innovation
- Methodologies and creative approaches
- Archives and collections as pedagogy
- Collaborations with the heritage, museum and library sectors
- Engaging social groups and communities, local authorities and the
public
- Valuing history to inform future generations
- Descriptions of collections and user-centered projects
- Copyright and intellectual property
2. Textiles and Co-creation
Digital platforms for the co-creation of textiles are providing
opportunities for the consumer to become the designer. NIKEiD offering
customised sportswear, shoes and backpacks was launched in 2012. Knit
For You, an Adidas 2017 pop-up shop in Berlin, is researching and
testing the concept of in-store production of custom knitted garments
within four hours. Digital print bureaux such as Contrado and
Spoonflower offer a range of fabric printing services for both interior
and fashion applications including garment make-up, wallpaper and
giftwrap. Platforms offer tuition in how to achieve colour matching and
repeat designs. These emerging co-creation technologies have the
potential to disrupt traditional textile design and manufacturing
industries. This call welcomes submissions that address, but are not
limited to, the following:
- Emerging models of co-creation that involve textiles and digital
platforms. Who are the stakeholders? What are the costing models? What
technologies are required? What is the consumer interface? Who are the
beneficiaries?
- The barriers and enablers to adoption by consumers, retailers and
textile manufacturing industries.
- The changing role of the textile designer. Who owns the design
process? Will co-creation platforms facilitate the craft
ofmaking-at-home?
- The sustainability effects of co-creation models. Will co-creation
models result in reduced over-stocking or waste? Will consumer-led
design lead to more sustainable and ethical supply chain practices?
- Co-creation as entertainment.
- Co-creation platforms as consumer research.
- Co-creation and social enterprise.
3. Bio Textiles
Continued movement towards circular and ethical design practices in
textiles (and associated disciplines and industries) has led to the
emergence of (or reconnection with) what might be termed bio textile
practices. These practices range from re-conceptualizing the role of
natural fibres, the conception and development of new biological and
agricultural processes that result in alternative textiles/materials,
the use of natural alternatives to harmful chemicals in textile
coloration and finishing, to engagement with biodegradable and bio-based
fibres and finishes. All draw on an interdisciplinary knowledge base and
are often realized in design through hands-on engagement with materials
and processes that are often central to textile design practice. In
relation to this theme, this call welcomes papers that address, but are
not limited to, the following focal points:
- Textile practices incorporating natural dyes
- DIY approaches to creating bioplastics, bio textiles and composite
materials
- Growing your own textiles
- Design concepts around biodegradable textiles
- Coloration and finishing
- Using biological processes for textile design purposes
- New spaces for textile fabrication
- Bio textiles/materials and digital fabrication processes
- Sustainability benefits of bio materials (environmental, social,
economic, cultural)

The Call for Participation for the next AIGA DEC Conference, [MAKE], is

[MAKE] will take place at the Herron School of Art and Design,
IUPUI<http://herron.iupui.edu/> in Indianapolis from 7-9 June 2018.
The conference organizers seek to establish a space for our design
community to explore the full complexity of making and its applications
within todays contexts. The discussion will be divided into four themes:
Make [community], Make [curriculum], Make [form], and Make [experience].
Details about each of these themes can be found in the call.
From the call: For many designers, being labeled a maker may be
perceived as a slight. However, we know that designers sit at a unique
intersection of the arts and social sciences where making serves as a
distinct asset to our process. Whether organizing a community, planning
new healthcare services, building a website, or speculating on the
future, designers have an inherent drive to make as a way to facilitate
solutions. This discussion is especially relevant as the AIGA Designer
2025 Trends are disseminated through our community. The role of making
inside many of these trends challenges our traditional notions of the
activity and ask us to rethink the role of the designer in an evolving
paradigm. Authors are encouraged to frame their work in context with the

Conference theme: Service Design Proof of Concept
Service Design can no longer be considered an emerging discipline.
Though recent and in continuous evolution, it is now consolidated enough
to be assessed and reviewed in terms of effectiveness and impact on
economy and society: how far has the logic of services (and of Service
Design culture) influenced the different domains of innovation and value
creation? How much has this been truly integrated into the innovation
process of private and public sectors? How effectively has this been
understood, evaluated and discussed? How far have digital technologies
and media been influencing service design and delivery? Initially,
Service Design mainly concentrated on the paradigm shift from designing
the materiality of objects to focusing on immaterial experiences,
interfaces, interactions, and strategies. Thus, for some decades
attention has been paid to the changing role and competencies of the
designer, and to the establishment of Service Design as a discipline in
its own right, despite its multi-disciplinary approach which includes
management, ethnography, sociology, and organizational studies, to
mention but a few. Now it is time to validate and review the models,
processes and practices developed and used in the service design
ecosystem, from its academic community to practitioners, companies and
organizations at large.
The overarching scope of the conference is to reflect on the evolution
and impact that this discipline and practice has made in different
fields and sectors. To do this, ServDes2018 will create an opportunity
firstly for sharing thoughts and experiences among scholars,
practitioners and organisations, and secondly, to discuss service design
in terms of proof of concept, and the extent to which public and private
organizations are ready to embed service design into their processes.

for a Circular Economy

CALL FOR PAPERS
Over the last two decades, much effort has gone into developing
strategies to reduce waste and emissions in products, systems and the
urban environment. Accelerating rates of consumption and discard,
however, continue to undermine many of these larger efforts. It is clear
that we need new systems-based approaches to reduce rising levels of
resource consumption and energy use in order to implement a more
equitable and environmentally sustainable society and economy. Building
upon the experience of the first conference,Unmaking Waste:
Transforming Production and Consumption in Time and Place (May 2015),
Unmaking Waste 2018 will address the following themes from a similarly
multidisciplinary perspective:
1. Eco-Design and Development:
Designing and managing objects, buildings, precincts and systems to
reduce resource and energy use, and increase environmental and human
wellbeing.
2. Sustainable Consumption:
Transforming consumption and service provision, including marketing, to
better suit a resource-constrained, environmentally challenged world.
3. Waste Minimization:
Reducing waste and pollution at all scales, in all domains and
activities, and transforming waste and pollution into states of greater
value for reuse.
4. Circular Economy:
Optimizing social, material and economic relations to further the goals
of the Circular Economy, including product and environment
life-extension, reuse and repair.
Call for Abstracts (Deadline: December 15, 2017)
Abstracts should be no more than 300 words, and address the purpose,
methods, and implications of the work to be presented. They should
include a proposed title, and nominate one or more of the above themes
that seem most relevant to the subject. All abstracts, conference
presentations and full papers must be in English. Abstracts must be
received no later than 5pm, December 15, 2017. All abstracts will be
peer-reviewed and all submissions will receive a written response with
feedback from the Conference Organising Committee by February 2nd, 2018.
The authors of successful abstracts will then be invited to submit their
full papers for review by May 4th, 2018.
Full papers will be double-blind peer reviewed, and returned to their
authors for revision before June 8th, 2018. Papers that are accepted, or
accepted pending revision, will have until July 30th 2018, for
completion. The full accepted, corrected papers will be published online
in time for the conference. It is anticipated that a selection of these
papers will be published in an edited book or special issue of a
journal. More details on this will be available on the conference
website when they come to hand.
