Archive Assistant
This role provides support to the Archivist of the Inner Temple. The archive holds the past administrative records of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple. Dating from 1505, these include records relating to the admission, education and call to the bar of members; the management of the Inn by the Treasurer and Council of Benchers, known as the Inn's Parliament, and its committees and sub-committees; the day to day administration of the Inn and its property by the Sub-Treasurer and his staff; and the conduct of events taking place within the Inn. The Inn also holds some records relating to the Temple Church, which is jointly owned and administered by the Inner Temple and the Middle Temple. The post holder will be a graduate and will either have recently obtained post-graduate archive qualification or will be seeking to gain experience prior to joining a course.
The responsibilities for this role include:
• Updating the admissions database using the admissions stamp
books, admission and call papers and using the ODNB to research further biographical details about past members.
• Answering enquiries via email and telephone.
• Assisting with cataloguing using Microsoft Word.
• Helping researchers with their enquiries.
• Assisting in the care and preservation of the archive collection and maintaining good order in the strong rooms.
The position requires a person with the following skills
• A high level of attention to detail and accuracy of work
• Organised and self motivated
• An ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels (including very senior judges and barristers).
• Competency with database in particular Microsoft Access.
• An interest in and knowledge of history
• General computer literacy and specific experience of Word applications.
• Experience in family history research
