Title: On the maximum possible life span of humans. Did it change?
Abstract: A classical problem in demography is whether there is an upper limit to the life time of humans (considered as a random variable). There is no consensus on this issue. We consider this problem on the basis of a dataset of life spans of people who (were born and ) died in The Netherlands during the years 1986-2015 at a minimal age of 95 years. The analysis is purely based on those data, no medical or demographic arguments were brought in. Using extreme value theory it is shown that the upper limit of the life span distribution is indeed finite and that the upper limit did not change significantly over the 30 years although the number of people dying at over 94 years increased threefold.
