Dear Ana,
thanks for the message - again here I would agree with some aspects, and if I get it right: the baseline, i.e. the need to overcome any kind of nationalism, parochialism etc - while hesitating to agree on at least part of what you capture as Catalan values: that part of making bread out of stones, reminds me too much of Matthew 14:13-2: economics and success etc. are not about good will, nor is it about diligenza … - hard work - sure, difficult and complex questions.
The same goes for the
> broader project for peace and stability called the EU
which was and is getting weaker and weaker in particular after '89, facing difficulties to stabilise itself without ’the enemy at the eastern doorstep’ - sure, again difficult and complex questions.
[Also: the 'imagined threat’ from Greece etc., not obliging itself to Mathew 14:13-2 and the Swabian housewife, is [fortunately] not a suitable as replacement - yes, again ...].
The reason for writing is another one:
I like that we are now approaching a debate on substantial issues.
The original post -mand my critique as that of others - was about two things:
* No political postings, as this is an 'academic list'
* Academia is about facts and completely distinct from political positioning.
I suppose a common fault line in politics and political/social science to confuse things - in this light your contribution is very interesting and welcome, not talking about ’the call’ but about the meaning and relationship of regional, national and supranational ‘identity’.
I am wondering if, sociologically, Archer’s elaboration on upwards and downwards conflation may be helpful. The reason for stating/asking this is that you - and I did the same as long as I could claim to refer myself to any 'national constituency’ - reproduce some of the tensions or are getting caught in them. - The problem I still see is that we are - also in other cases of re-emerging nationalism - caught in a globalising system that is in some ways facing the contradiction brew the ’smaller unit’ being too small to find a solution and the larger system being too large to engage in the concerns of real people living in their communities.’ - Then to be asked if it is just an old tension, not having been solved by Maine, Toennies, Lockwood, von Ketteler, Pope Pius XI etc. and not being solved by us?
thanks and best regards,
Peter
