I am not familiar with the expression "polling" but thinking about Tanya's references to "poll
pick" I suspect that will have something to do specifically with blackband ironstone mining and
processing.
By way of example in the extraction of economically important Black Band Ironstone in NE Leeds, the
extracted section was anywhere between 2.5 to 6 feet, which was predominately mudstone with 3 to 7
layers of clay-ironstone nodules or nodular sheets. At this period mines Ironstone was hauled to
the surface and stacked in discrete heaps. This material was then left to weather and thereafter
the surrounding mudstone/shale was separated from the iron nodules.
Conjecture but I suspect polling may have been that processes of separating out ironstone nodules
from weathered mudstone/shale. The stacking could be either side of the process?
