Apologies for cross-posting

Dear colleague,

I am conducting a research project on the risk of communicable diseases in humanitarian emergencies at the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom. I invite you to take part in an online Delphi process with three stages. The first stage is to make a list of the most critical risk factors, the second stage will focus on ways to measure the risk factors and when they are relevant and the final stage will focus on the weights and impact of the risk factors in a variety of different emergency types.

It would be very helpful to me if you would participate in this project by sharing your expertise. If you can take part, please click on the link below, which will lead you to the start page of the online survey. The surveys will not ask you for any personal information only for your professional opinion; you can take part in one of more of the three surveys. Below, you can find further information about the project and the consent procedure. Once you have read the information you can decide if you would like to take part.

If you have any questions, you can contact me by email at [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> or by phone at +49-163-2335488. You are also welcome to contact one of my supervisors at the University of East Anglia: Professor Paul Hunter (School of Medicine, [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>) and Dr Alexandria Innes (School of Philosophy, Politics, Language and Communication, [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>)

This survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete. The survey will be available until November 10, 5 pm (GMT). You are also welcome to send this email on to any colleagues who might be interested.

Yours sincerely,

Participant Information:
Communicable diseases risks in humanitarian emergencies
Researcher: Charlotte C Hammer

I would like to invite you to participate in my research by sharing your expertise. To decide whether to participate you will need the following additional information about the process.

What is the study about?
I want to find out which risk factors are especially important in different types of emergencies. Therefore, I am developing a risk assessment tool. For this purpose, I am interested in your expertise and experience concerning the importance of the most critical risk factors and how they are weighted in different disaster types. As these information will inform a practical tool for risk assessment I am also interested in finding potential thresholds for each risk factor that are quantitative, and criteria for judgement for qualitative risk factors.

How will you be involved?
You will complete this survey and up to two more survey by selecting factors from a list, ranking them and giving them other properties. You will have the opportunity to give further free-text comments. You can exit the survey at any time and the information you input will only be saved once you complete the survey.

Who will have access to the data?
Data management will follow the 1988 Data Protection Act. I will not keep information about you that could identify you to someone else. No questions will be asked that can identify you or anyone else. The data will be stored safely in a password protected file on a university computer for the duration of the project. Following completion of the project, I will store the data for a maximum of 10 years before deleting the file in accordance with UEA research data storage policy.
This data will only be used for my research. Results from the analysis of the data will be published for academic and wider audiences and presented at conferences. In any publication resulting from this research, all participants will be fully anonymised.

Who has reviewed the study?
The research study has been approved under the regulations of the University of East Anglia’s Faculty of Health and Medicine Ethics Committee.

Who do I speak to if problems arise?
If there is a problem please let me know. You can contact me via these details:

Charlotte C Hammer, Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia
Norwich NR4 7TJ, United Kingdom [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> +49-1632335488

If you have a formal complaint or are concerned that this research is being conducted improperly, please contact Professor Max Bachmann, at Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia, Norwich NR4 7TJ UEA, tel. +44-01603-591220.

Who will benefit from this research?
There will be no immediate personal benefits (I am not paying participants to take part). The point of the research is to produce a tool which makes it easier to prevent or stop disease outbreaks. Understanding better how to reduce infectious diseases in camp settings could help refugees, internally displaced persons, host communities, health professionals and aid workers.

OK, I want to take part – what do I do next?
You will need to click on the start survey button at the end of this page. You might want to print this page containing the information on the project for your records.

Can you change your mind?
You have no obligation to participate in this study. You may discontinue your involvement at any time before clicking the submit button at the very end of the survey.

Thank you very much for your time.
