Hi Bilkis,
John's asked me to pick up on your email.
In terms of user involvement we did a couple of things - early on we did a short one-question motivational survey to understand why users were coming to our website. We also carried out some testing of navigational names with website visitors using a tool called TreeJack. Finally, we had a round of user testing on the National Science and Media Museum website, which launched in March this year and helped to inform our choices. We could have done much much more and - as John says - we will continue to test and change things.
The project was structured by having a steering group made up of representatives from the senior management teams from all museums in the Group, and a project team made from the digital department and digital colleagues in other teams. We spoke to key stakeholders as required - and agreed early to a simple navigation structure with them - but didn't have a broader website committee.
To be honest, I think we were also massively aided by the fact that the Science Museum site had a small menu to start with. Our navigation has actually ended up bringing some key content to the top (such as a a dedicated section for the public programme). We also have a site dedicated to the Science Museum Group (group.sciencemuseum.org.uk) which helps to carry a lot of our corporate information, and significantly reduced the sprawling 'About' section of the website!
Thanks very much,
Emily
