Dear all,
Thank you to everyone who responded with information about digital Microfilm readers. In case it is of use to others, most organisations are using the Covergold SL1000: http://www.covergold.co.uk/products/3/sl1000-digital-microfilm-scanner
Pros:
• handles both fiche and film
• magnification and display is much better than on the traditional machines
• the software allows manipulation of the image
• printing is flexible as you can select just the are you wish to print
• there is the ability to scan and save to the PC or to scan and save directly to a memory stick
• good public response (from users already comfortable with computers)
• you can prevent users from copying material if you want
Cons:
• quite expensive
• operated using a PC and we have found that some of our users are not comfortable with PC use and therefore opt to use the traditional machines
• moving forward through the reel is slower than using a traditional machine
• there is a delay whilst the film focuses whenever you move forwards or backwards though a film which you don't experience using a traditional machine
• if you lock the screen and come back to it you can't see the pages as you scroll through the reel
Best wishes
Cassandra
