This is your chance whether you are an academic, industrialist or student to
have your say about what type of scanning facilities you would value.

For more details about this contact: [log in to unmask]

In Sept 2015 a case was made to the EPSRC Mid-Range Facilities Call for a Mid-
range X-ray Tomography Facility. The aim was not only to open up X-ray imaging
for those who do not have their own facilities (academics and industry) but
also to provide:

Access a wider range of scales (from 300mm samples to 50nm by X-ray down to
1nm by electron microscopy on the same region of interest).

The ability to complement the high frame rate experiments at synchrotrons with
facilities that would afford greater access and more time.

In situ rigs (for hire) to allow a range of environments to be studied either
at the mid-range facility or elsewhere (e.g. synchrotrons)

And allow those who want to do time-lapse imaging to have access to facilities
that can facilitate this

Also, to open up hyperspectral or colour imaging and enable people to do
correlative imaging (across scales, time or multiple imaging modes) combining
X-ray and electron imaging.

In 2016 the case for a tomography facility was one of the bids prioritised for
funding and the EPSRC are now carrying out a road mapping exercise. See:

This is your chance whether you are an academic, industrialist or student to
have your say about what type of facilities you would value. It is not
intended to replace individual facilities across the UK but rather to provide
greater opportunities for X-ray imaging than are possible in individual labs
and to make sure that access is provided with a high level of technical
support. Clearly it is possible that if they receive little response that
investment in X-ray tomography will not be forthcoming or it will be directed
to things of less value to you so you input is very important. It would be
really appreciated if you could complete a short survey to be found at:

Of course please feel free to contact us if you need further information or
want to discuss anything. We are really keen to make sure that as many people
as possible get a chance to input into the road map.

Yours, Philip. Prof. P.J. Withers FRS FREng.
