Hi MCger’s
At Culture24 we’ve been interested at better understanding the relationship between social value/purpose and digital technologies for museums
There is of course so much current discussion around digital transformation and museums (of which we are all familiar!). But there is also significant current debate around the social purpose of museums, particularly in these times of massive political, social, technological, environmental and economic changes. Despite these two debates both focusing on the relevance of museums in changing times, there seems to be very little exploration of the overlaps. At the same time there seems to be much work going on in other sectors exploring the social value/purpose of digital technology e.g. around ideas of digital democracy or digital social innovation. We’d like to know how museums might explore these overlaps more
I’m aware that there is a big social value argument around the significant work museums are undertaking around digitisation, opening up, online publishing of collections – relating to promoting access to cultural heritage - but I’m wondering if museums can also use digital technologies for more activist social purposes. What do you all think?
I wrote a piece recently that discusses this area

Culture24’s next Let’s Get Real project that we are developing in partnership with Happy Museum and Battersea Arts Centre is seeking to look into this further. We are currently in the planning phase and to help inform this we are seeking out the views of the wider sector on this area. We’d love to hear your views. You can find more about the project and the related consultation here.

You can of course also share your thoughts as a response to this thread
Let me know what you think!
Cheers
Sejul
