Subject: Sir Hilary Beckles 'Cricket without a cause: the fall and rise of the mighty West Indies cricketers' - 28 September 2017 book launch
Dear all,
I am writing to advise you of the launch of ‘Cricket without a cause: the fall and rise of the mighty West Indies test cricketers’ by Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, on 28 September at King’s College. The British Foundation for the University of the West Indies is jointly hosting this event with the Ramphal Institute at King’s College and we are using the event to raise funds for the hurricane relief effort in the Caribbean. Details are below.
The collapse from awesome to awful is considered a mystery in the annals of modern sport and popular performance culture. Public and academic discourses rage in the West Indies and everywhere the game is played and followed. There is rage as experts seek reasons for the ruin.”
In his most recent monograph, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, cricketer, university academic and former West Indies Cricket Board director expresses these sentiments as he examines international cricket performance of the West Indies. The book, Without a Cause: Fall and Rise of the Mighty West Indian Test Cricketers, will be officially launched on September 28, 2017 at the Anatomy Theatre, Strand Campus of King's College, London WC2 2LS, UK at 6.30 p.m. (London, UK time). The event is being hosted by the British Foundation for The University of the West Indies (BFUWI) and the Ramphal Institute at King’s College. The Jamaica National Group are kindly sponsoring the event and the fundraising reception which follows immediately after the launch.
According to the book’s synopsis, cricket enthusiast, Beckles shows that only the ‘Windies’ have been unable to field a Test team filled with its best players. He notes that the best available players occupied the bottom of Test rankings and others were lured by the bounty of franchise cricket as ‘cash before country’ became the new mantra. Test cricket, once the gold of the Windies brand, was devalued and diminished.
Guests are invited to make a donation towards a fund supporting students at UWI and young children in Caribbean islands affected by the devastation wrought by recent Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Sir Hilary will be donating royalties from sales on the night to this cause. Tickets can be booked via Eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/sir-hilary-beckles-cricket-without-a-cause-the-fall-and-rise-of-the-mighty-west-indies-cricket-team-tickets-37768379239
Members of the press are invited to a press conference which will take place at 10 am on September 28 on the first floor of the Virginia Woolf Building, 22 Kingsway, London where Sir Hilary will be available to discuss his work. Members of the press are asked to register by emailing [log in to unmask]
