The Royal Society of Biology is holding an exciting new training course on Media Skills for Scientists!

Who is this course useful for: This course will be useful to those working in science who wish to engage the media with their research.
Course contents:
Insights from Lou about life on a news desk
This interactive session will look at contrasts between the news-desk and the research world and implications this may have for researchers when you are working with journalists.
Thinking like a journalist
This session provides a chance for you to examine abstracts and your own research and practice turning them into news stories.
Dealing with media requests
During this scenario based part of the workshop you will look at some examples of media requests and how to deal them. The group will look at media statements and establishing best-practice for this. You will also learn about some considerations when working with a press office.
Simplifying your message
You will consider the big ideas in your research and learn how to effectively use analogies and story-telling techniques.
Rules of engagement
Understanding the conventions journalists use and what they mean for you, such as being on the record and off the record. This is also an chance to consider your rights as a source.
Telephone and radio: how to deal with a live interview
You will learn to use stepping stones and key messaging and bridging techniques for if you are put on the spot. You will also have the opportunity to practice being interviewed by a journalist and receive feedback to help you improve.
Trainer:
Lou Del Bello is a multimedia journalist specialised in environment, climate change and development issues. She has a strong track record of devising successful editorial strategies for a variety of digital platforms through video, audio and interactive formats. She will be able to provide a unique insight into how stories can go viral, given her experience at SciDev.Net of overseeing an unprecedented growth in the platform's traffic and engagement.
She's also an accomplished writer with an extensive portfolio of news and features published on major outlets such as The Guardian and the New Scientist and she runs the political podcast Breaking Brexit. Throughout the workshop she will be able to support scholars in finding the 'newsworthy' angles in their research.
Fees:
Society members - £150 + VAT
Staff and members of Member Organisation, Staff of HUBS or SCAS members - £200 + VAT
Non-members - £300 + VAT
Non-members who have completed a membership application and made payment can also benefit from the discounted member rate.
