Dear Colleagues,
The Division of Chemical Physics will be presenting the third annual Justin Jankunas Doctoral Dissertation Award in Chemical Physics at the 2018 March meeting of the American Physical Society, to be held in Los Angeles, March 3-9. The recipient of this award will have the opportunity of giving a 36 minute oral presentation of his or her doctoral research at the DCP Prize Session of this meeting. In addition, the winner will receive a stipend of $1,000, a certificate that will be presented at the APS Prizes & Awards Ceremony, and a grant of up to $1,000 to travel to the meeting. The application deadline is October 2, 2017. Eligible candidates should have passed their thesis defense during the 12 month period prior to the application deadline. Please note that the deadline for submitting an abstract to the conference, which is a required component of the award application, is November 3, 2017. Further details may be found at http://www.aps.org/programs/honors/dissertation/jankunas.cfm
Justin Jankunas obtained his doctorate from Prof. Richard Zare at Stanford in 2013 and then worked with Prof. Andreas Osterwalder at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne until 2015. In this short period he published 19 papers in molecular reaction dynamics until his tragic death in a motorcycle accident in 2015. Justin’s family, friends, and colleagues have established this award to encourage and recognize promising chemical physicists. A campaign has begun to raise an endowment of $50K to support the annual award and related expenses in perpetuity. To contribute to the campaign, please visit http://www.aps.org/about/support/campaigns/jankunas/index.cfm
We strongly encourage all eligible candidates, including especially women and members of minority groups, to apply for this prestigious award.
Sincerely,
Timothy Zwier Scott Anderson Robert Gordon,
DCP Chair DCP Program Chair DCP Secretary/Treasurer
