Salisbury Cathedral Library & Archive
Following a successful HLF grant application for our ‘Beyond the Library Door: Sharing Books & Bindings Project’ we are delighted to be in the position to recruit two new posts: an assistant librarian and an assistant archivist.
Salisbury Cathedral library contains approx. 10,000 books dating from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present day the majority of which are printed books from the late 15th century to the 19th century. The archive collection also contains many thousand documents from the 12th century to the present day – this collection is continually growing as new modern material is received.
The current library catalogues are outdated manual systems and many books are completely uncatalogued. This project will enable us to open up access to the collection through an online searchable catalogue and to record additional copy specific information so we are better informed about the collection and can plan for its future conservation needs. The majority of the archive catalogue is also still in manual form although considerable progress has been made in recent years re-cataloguing the collection to professional standards using Excel. Central to the Beyond the Library Door Project is to identify, acquire and establish a collection management system suitable for both the library and archive collections. The project will also involve working closely with groups of volunteers who will be inputting data from our current card index, recording copy specific information regarding bindings and provenance, and cleaning books. There will also be a series of outreach activities including talks and discovery days for adults and children.
Assistant Librarian – 3 days a week, fixed term for 3 years
This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in the scoping and acquisition of a collection management system and to work with volunteers recording and inputting copy specific information on binding and previous ownership as well as a book cleaning programme. We also want to catalogue the remaining uncatalogued books dated pre-1850.
Assistant Archivist – 2 days a week, fixed term for 3 years
The assistant archivist will play a key role in re-cataloguing the archive collection, initially using Excel, and then the new collection management system as well as providing support to the archivist in a range of professional activities including monitoring the archive storage areas and managing enquiries.

Closing date for both posts: 12 noon Thursday 7th September 2017
Interviews: Friday 15th September 2017
