OK, if Peter and David think this is the right thing to do,
I will butt out. It doesn't affect TOPCAT etc in any case,
clearly SPLAT is the main place this will have any user-visible
consequences. The only thing I require is that the build and
unit tests continue to run; at least on my build system (currently
amd64), and preferably on as many other platforms as possible.
