Social Science Lab Director

Our newly established research group, headed by Professor Hangartner, focuses on innovative research that employs field and natural experimental methods to quantify the impacts of immigration and integration policies in Europe and other immigrant receiving regions. The goal is to generate the most rigorous evidence about what works and what does not when it comes to immigration and integration, and design better policies for immigrants and their host communities. 

The Lab Director co-leads the Lab in partnership with Professor Hangartner. The Lab Director will design, oversee and coordinate the group’s strategic vision and research agenda in collaboration with Professor Hangartner. The Lab Director will be in charge of the overall governance and management of the lab as well as its external relations, dissemination and impact strategy. The Lab Director will guide and collaborate with the program managers to develop new projects, manage relationships with the affiliated faculty from the Zurich and Stanford branch of the Immigration Policy Lab as well as relevant government agencies and nonprofit organizations across Europe, oversee the operating budget, and create a culture and environment of results-based management. Furthermore, she or he will be involved in all aspects of the research, including study design, coordinating data collection campaigns, organizing research meetings, and co-author manuscripts for leading peer reviewed journals, white papers, policy briefs, and grant proposals, and disseminating the results to academics, policy makers and the public. 

The initial appointment will be for one year beginning between September and October 2017, with an expected renewal for many more years to come, contingent on satisfactory performance. Salary will be very competitive in line with ETH standards.

The ideal candidate will have, at the time of appointment, completed an advanced degree, such as an MBA, a master’s degree, or a PhD. She or he should have a few years’ experience in coordinating collaborative research projects and/or leading client projects and managing teams in the corporate or non-profit sector. Running and analyzing field experiments and/or conducting quasi-experimental program evaluations would be highly useful. Knowledge of immigration and integration policy in Europe would also be highly valued. Excellent English writing skills are essential. While all work-related interactions are in English, the ability to operate in French or German is also an asset.
