Applications are invited for an Early Career Research Associate to work on an innovative Alcohol Research UK funded project entitled: Faith in recovery: Service-user evaluation of faith-based alcohol treatment with Professor Mark Jayne and Dr Andrew Williams (School of Geography and Planning, Cardiff University).
The funder has specified that this post is for an Early Career Researcher: someone who has no more than three years employment (0.2 FTE or above) in an academic institution since completion of their PhD. Applicants with six months or less until submission of their PhD completion are also eligible to apply.
The research examines the contemporary landscape of faith-based alcohol treatment in the UK, in order to investigate the differential ethics of care and experiences of those in recovery. Religion and spirituality have historically had significant influence on alcohol treatment and recovery provision. Yet the size, scope and significance of contemporary activities remain unclear. Foregrounding ethnographic methodology the research will map the size, scope and activities of faith-based alcohol services in the UK – including organisational ethos and theological/practical approaches. Particular attention is given to the ways in which religion and spirituality is positioned as an ‘active ingredient’ of treatment and the moral expectations and identities bound up with service-users access to, and experiences of treatment and recovery.
Flexibility is essential for the post as the national case study fieldwork will involve the successful candidate spending short periods based in a hotel/B&B accommodation. Due to the nature of the project and the logistical challenges of arranging interviews and undertaking participant observation in alcohol treatment centres, some of the fieldwork research activities will involve some out of normal ‘office hours’ (i.e. 9am-5pm) commitments (e.g. evening and/or weekend work).
The successful candidate will require an Enhanced DBS check
The post is available full time for 12 months from 1st September 2017.
Salary: £32,004 - £38,183 per annum (Grade 6). It is not anticipated that an appointment be made above £32,004 per annum.
We anticipate that interviews for short-listed candidates will be held week commencing 24th July 2017.
