Bristol is a vibrant city with a lively cultural offer, noted for its creativity and quality of life and with archives spanning ten centuries of Bristol’s history, ‘Designated as an Outstanding Collection’ .
This is an excellent opportunity to take the lead in developing an established and innovative archive service, overseeing the existing team of 11 posts. Bristol is both city and county, and you will be responsible for its archives, as well the extensive British Empire and Commonwealth Collections previously held by the British Empire & Commonwealth Museum. As well as ensuring day to day care and access – including digital access - for visitors and enquirers, you will play a key role in further developing newly established partnerships and externally funded projects. In addition to local projects involving other cultural organisations and universities in the city, in 2018 Bristol Archives will become the south west regional centre for the British Library's 'Unlocking the UK’s Sound Heritage' HLF funded project.
The Bristol Archives team work alongside Bristol City Council’s Modern Records Unit at ‘B’ Bond Warehouse in the Cumberland Basin, Bristol. The City Archivist reports to the Head of Collections & Archives within the City Council’s Bristol Culture team. Close working with other staff across Culture is expected involving museum curators, exhibition staff, learning, participation and arts and events.
The successful candidate will be an experienced archive professional who can demonstrate good personnel and business management skills and an excellent understanding of the key issues facing archive management today. Bristol Archives utilises the CALM database for archive management and the EMu museum documentation system, for managing its digital assets.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the knowledge, aptitude and experience detailed in the Person Specification.
