LSE is committed to building a diverse, equitable and truly inclusive university
Salary from £34,156 to £41,317 pa inclusive with potential to progress to £44,456 pa inclusive
This is a fixed term, full-time appointment for 3 years.
This post is the result of a recent ESRC grant that the Department has recently received. The research involved will investigate how, why and with what consequences the Chinese government procures welfare services from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) through sub-contracting. Governmental sub-contracting of welfare services from NGOs has become commonplace in many Western countries. However, in the case of China this is a new endeavour.
Candidates should have a PhD in a subject relevant to social policy, development studies, politics or sociology; an emerging track record of high quality publications; field research experience and knowledge of NGOs in China; ability and willingness to work as part of a team; ability to work independently to tight timescales.
We offer an occupational pension scheme, generous annual leave and excellent training and development opportunities.

Subject: Two PhD studentships in ESRC South Coast DTP - Department of Gerontology, University of Southampton
Dear colleagues,
We are delighted to announce the opportunity to apply for two PhD studentships in the ESRC South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership and the Department of Gerontology, University of Southampton.
Is caring good for your health? (Lead Supervisor: Dr Athina Vlachantoni, [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> ) Informal care provision is an increasingly common experience in individual life courses. To date, research on the association between care provision and the carer's health has produced mixed findings, depending on the characteristics of care provision taken into account. The aim of this exciting research is to examine the evidence of a causal relationship between informal care provision and the carer's health status over time, using a range of indicators relating to the caring activity and health, by conducting longitudinal analysis on data from waves 1-7 of Understanding Society. The project will take place in collaboration with the Centre for Research on Ageing, the ESRC Centre for Population Change and AgeUK.

Carers and loneliness in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (Lead Supervisor: Dr Rosalind Willis, [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> ) Loneliness is a subjective feeling of inadequacy of relationships, which negatively affects quality of life. People who provide informal care are known to be at higher risk of poor mental and physical health (carer burden), and many find themselves isolated in their caring role. Research on rates of loneliness among carers to date has shown mixed results. This PhD will explore the relationships between caring, loneliness, and health outcomes among people aged 50 and over using statistical analysis of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. The findings will be used to make policy and practice recommendations.
