*Free* 2 day workshop on ‘Stigma, Health, and Inequality’, Cardiff, 11-12 January 2018
We are delighted to welcome Professor Imogen Tyler, Dr Tom Slater, and Professor Graham Scambler as keynote speakers for this workshop.
Funded by the Foundation for the Sociology of Health and Illness, the workshop is organised by Gareth Thomas and myself and will involve bringing together 40 senior and early career academics in the UK from various disciplines – sociology, anthropology, human geography, urban studies, media studies, and social policy – whose research interests lie across the fields of stigma, health (as a state of physical, mental, and social wellbeing), and inequality. We are seeking contributions which do not necessarily seek to quantitatively ‘prove’ a link between inequalities and stigma, but rather qualitatively explore the experiences, attitudes, and practices of people with regards to a range of topics including, but not limited to:
• Ageing;
• Disability;
• Employment;
• Food poverty;
• Housing and displacement;
• Media representations (e.g. ‘poverty porn’);
• Mental health;
• Migration and asylum;
• Nationality and citizenship;
• Parenthood and family life;
• Place-based / territorial stigma;
• Race and ethnicity;
• Social class;
• Welfare reform;
• Youth studies
People interested in taking part should submit a title and 250 word abstract here https://thomasg23.wixsite.com/stigma by midnight on 1 September 2017. Alternatively, abstracts can be emailed directly to Gareth Thomas ([log in to unmask]) and Kayleigh Garthwaite ([log in to unmask]).
Notifications of acceptance will be received by 15 September 2017. You can also register an interest to attend as a non-presenter via the workshop website (also by September 1st). There is no guarantee of attendance (registration is merely an indication of interest at the moment) – but priority is given to those who submit an abstract. We are also able to offer bursaries to five postgraduate students (£100 each) to help cover costs for travel, accommodation, and subsistence.
Please get in touch with me or Gareth if you have any questions about the workshop. We look forward to welcoming you to Cardiff!
All the best,
Kayleigh and Gareth
